His musical intellect and sense for drama, without being abstractly distant, are combined into an appealing set of songs that suggest perhaps as much classically influenced 20th century art music as jazz. In one example, the most lengthy tune in the batch of seven, Lockwood's aptly named fifteen-plus-minute "This is Now" starts off in a sort of electric Miles Davis mode, with Vinny Golia's contorted saxophone lines fitting perfectly with Lockwood's synth-generated underpinnings. However, somewhere near midpoint it takes a turn in the road, becoming an acoustic vehicle of a modern vintage that has a resembleance in style to one in which Andrew Hill can be easily imagined. Setting aside comparisons, the truth is, Lockwood's conceptual approach is destinctively his, both by way of his compositional style and the manner in which he executes his compositions.
