Pianist Steve Lockwood's interest with jazz is multi-faceted on his latest album, Equipoise. At times his and the bands' ideas are straight-ahead, at other times they are free and while sometimes they're reverential, they are also open minded to new paths. An ambitious, if slightly uneven, effort, Equipoise has Lockwood performing with guitarist Ken Rosser, saxophonist Kim Richmond, bassist Chris Colangelo, percussionist Brad Dutz, and drummers Billy Mintz and Kendall Kaye. With all compositions by Lockwood, the album basks in its composer's imagination.... .....some straight-ahead numbers are done well, especially on "Duke's Mood." On "Spanish Waltz," for example, the flamenco guitar evokes wonderfully...... As such... it suffers from what many jazz albums do not, an eagaerness to dare the obvious. |
